Arts-and-Crafts mansion, set high in the clouds, ideal to visit on a rainy day
If it’s one of those days where the rain, rain won’t go away, then it’s time to visit the Castle in the Clouds. Take a vintage trolley trip up to the magnificent Arts and Crafts-style mansion, the centerpiece of the Lucknow Estate, built in 1914 for Thomas and Olive Plant. Take your time exploring the mansion on a self-guided tour, highlighting everything from vintage clothes in Olive’s closets to innovative electrical fixtures and a central vacuuming system. A basement tour features the then-ultra-modern appliances and gives a glimpse into the lives of the servants. Hands-on activities include scavenger hunts and picture-drawing. The exhibit in the Carriage House offers images, memorabilia and objects highlighting the women, like Olive Plant, of the Progressive Era.
